Satellite Images Show Activity at Iranian Nuclear Sites Amid US-Iran Tensions
Satellite imagery analysed by CNN appears to show fresh activity at Iranian nuclear sites, raising questions over whether Tehran has begun rebuilding parts of its nuclear programme. The images, obtained by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), come as a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the United States in late June may be in jeopardy.
Under the MoU, Iran had reportedly agreed to halt all military nuclear programmes. However, US President Donald Trump has indicated the agreement may no longer be in effect after ordering fresh strikes on Iran. The US has also imposed new sanctions on Tehran following Iran's resumption of attacks on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Senior US officials said Washington is insisting on several conditions for any agreement with Iran, including strict limits on Iran's nuclear programme and the transfer of its nuclear material. They also said the US has military options in place to ensure Iran's nuclear sites remain inaccessible if diplomacy fails, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the Trump administration of breaching the interim agreement by imposing fresh sanctions. In a post on X, Araghchi said Tehran had “so far kept its word” while Washington had repeatedly violated its commitments. He warned that “there can only be mutual compliance” going forward.
The US has also demanded that Iran issue a public statement pledging safe passage for commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and stop attacks on vessels. Iran's Foreign Ministry said any US breach of commitments under the MoU would be met with “reciprocal action”.
Meanwhile, Iran completed the burial of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, raising questions about leadership transition. Trump has also warned Iran of severe consequences if Tehran succeeds in any assassination attempt against him. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said “1,000 missiles are locked and loaded” and claimed that orders have been given in the event of such an attack.
The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic efforts ongoing amid heightened military posturing. The developments are being closely monitored by international observers.
