RPF Cracks Down: Over 1,300 Cases, ₹7 Lakh Fine in Kerala Train Enforcement Drive

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Thiruvananthapuram Division has intensified enforcement drives across railway stations and trains in Kerala, registering 1,315 cases and collecting fines amounting to ₹7.04 lakh. The initiative aims to enhance passenger safety, discipline, and overall travel experience, according to a statement from the Railways.

The violations were booked under various provisions of the Railways Act, 1989, as amended by the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023. The amendments empower the RPF to impose civil penalties for offences such as unauthorised occupation of reserved seats, travelling without a valid ticket in reserved coaches, improper use of alarm chains, unlicensed hawking, drunkenness, nuisance, indecent behaviour, trespass, riding on rooftops or footboards, and smoking on railway premises.

The Jan Vishwas Act, enacted to decriminalise minor offences, replaces criminal prosecution with civil penalties for many violations. This change facilitates faster resolution of cases while maintaining enforcement through enhanced fines. The RPF stated that action against violators will continue strictly under the amended provisions.

Passengers are urged to adhere to railway rules to avoid penalties and ensure a safe journey for all. The drive is part of ongoing efforts to improve discipline and comfort in trains and stations across the division.
