Railway Gateman Arrested After Train Collision Kills 4 in West Bengal
A railway gateman has been arrested in connection with a tragic train collision that killed four people, including three school students, in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Friday. The accident occurred when a passenger train hit a school van attempting to cross the railway tracks at a manned level crossing.
The Eastern Railway confirmed the arrest, stating that the gateman is being held for alleged negligence. The identity of the gateman has not been disclosed pending investigation.
West Bengal's Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, announced the arrest on social media, emphasizing that any negligence would not be tolerated. He assured the public of a thorough investigation and strict action against those found responsible. Notably, Adhikari is not the chief minister; the state is led by Mamata Banerjee.
The collision has sparked outrage and grief, with local residents demanding accountability. The school van was carrying children when the accident occurred. Three children died on the spot, while the driver succumbed to injuries later. The train was reportedly running at normal speed.
Authorities are investigating whether the gateman failed to lower the gates in time or if there was a communication lapse. The incident highlights concerns about safety at level crossings, which remain a major cause of accidents on Indian railways.
The state government has announced compensation for the victims' families and promised support to the injured. The railway has also initiated a departmental inquiry.
