Rahul Gandhi Questions Amit Shah Over Pellet Gun Use on Students

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning the approval and use of pellet guns against students during protests. In his letter, Gandhi described the use of pellet guns as a 'barbaric assault' on students, raising concerns over the severe injuries and permanent damage caused by such weapons.

Pellet guns, which fire small lead pellets, have been used by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir for crowd control. Critics argue that the pellets can cause blindness, skull fractures, and even death. Gandhi's letter seeks clarity on who authorised the use of these weapons and whether any alternatives were considered.

The letter comes amid reports of students being injured during recent protests in the Kashmir Valley. Gandhi has demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for the use of excessive force. He also called for immediate measures to ban pellet guns and adopt non-lethal crowd-control methods.

Home Minister Amit Shah's office has not yet issued a response. The Ministry of Home Affairs maintains that security forces use minimal force to prevent escalation of violence and that pellet guns are used only when necessary.

Human rights organisations have repeatedly condemned the use of pellet guns, citing international standards that prohibit weapons causing unnecessary suffering. The Supreme Court of India has previously sought a report from the central government on the issue.

Rahul Gandhi's letter adds to the ongoing debate over the balance between maintaining public order and protecting citizens' rights. The use of pellet guns remains a contentious issue, with many calling for a complete ban and adoption of less-lethal alternatives such as water cannons or tear gas.
