Rahul Gandhi accuses Home Minister Amit Shah over Delhi student protest violence
New Delhi, July 29, 2026: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday directly blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the police action against student protesters in Delhi. Speaking to the media outside Parliament, Gandhi claimed he was not allowed to raise the issue in the Lok Sabha despite multiple requests.
Gandhi stated, “As you have seen today, the Leader of the Opposition is not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha. Multiple times I asked the Speaker to bring order to the House so that I could speak. Multiple times, Rijiju and Rajnath Singh were allowed to speak and I was not allowed to speak. And the excuse was that I said something about Amit Shah.”
He reiterated his accusation that the Home Minister was responsible for the police action, saying, “I will never ever apologise to the BJP, RSS or any person associated with them. It is my right as the LoP to raise issues that are important for this country.”
During his statement, Gandhi displayed a photograph of injured students and claimed that police used pellet guns and batons with nails against protesters. He alleged that one protester was likely to lose eyesight due to pellet injuries. He also questioned the presence of plainclothes officers among the police personnel.
“To me, the brutalisation of our students, the beating of our students, the assault on our students is a fundamental issue, like it is for millions of people. It's an issue for the students themselves, who are being threatened today,” he said. He further alleged that face recognition technology was being used against protesters and that the Bajrang Dal was being mobilised to intimidate them.
Gandhi asserted that any action by police forces under the Home Ministry requires the minister's order, directly attributing the incident to Amit Shah. The Home Ministry has not yet responded to the allegations.
The student protests, which began earlier this week, relate to demands over education policy and alleged police excesses. The government has maintained that police action was taken to maintain public order.
