Pune Rural Police Arrest Two More in Illegal Sex Determination Racket

Pune rural police have arrested two individuals accused of acting as agents in an illegal prenatal sex determination and female foeticide racket, officials said on Tuesday.

The accused have been identified as Abajirao Tengale (27) and Sachin Vishwanath Kadam (43), both residents of Boripardhi village in Daund taluka, Pune district. They are the latest arrests in a case that began last month when a government medical officer discovered a video showing a woman undergoing sonography for illegal sex determination.

An FIR was registered on May 20 at Yavat police station under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, which prohibits sex-selective abortions. The main racketeer, Annasahabe Giri (43), a bogus doctor with only a Class 12 education, was arrested on the same day. Police also arrested Dr Atul Jadhav, a doctor from Wagholi in Pune city, on May 24. Another suspect, Narendra Thakare, was arrested for allegedly supplying portable sonography machines to Giri.

The PCPNDT Act was enacted to prevent sex determination and female foeticide, practices that contribute to gender imbalance in India. The Pune rural police continue to investigate the network, aiming to dismantle the illegal operation.
