Awareness key to controlling HIV/AIDS, says Vizag Collector; urges end to discrimination

Visakhapatnam district Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore has emphasised that increasing public awareness about HIV/AIDS is essential to controlling the spread of the disease. Speaking at an event at the Collectorate on Monday, he called on people to treat persons living with HIV with equality and to avoid discrimination, misconceptions, and neglect.

The Collector, along with Joint Collector G. Vidyadhari and other officials, released HIV/AIDS awareness publicity material and a health handbook prepared by the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS). The materials are intended to provide accurate information and promote preventive practices among the public.

Mr. Kishore advised couples to undergo HIV tests before pregnancy and to maintain mutual trust in their relationships. He also cautioned against sharing used needles and syringes, and urged people to use screened, safe blood when required. These measures, he said, are vital for preventing new infections and ensuring the well-being of families.

The Collector further highlighted that discrimination against persons living with HIV is an offence under the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017. He informed that those living with HIV/AIDS have equal rights to employment, education, and medical services. This legal protection, he noted, is a step towards reducing stigma and ensuring social justice for affected individuals.

He urged people to dispel misconceptions about the disease and to seek information, advice, and guidance through the APSACS toll-free helpline number 1097. The helpline serves as a confidential resource for those seeking support and clarification about HIV/AIDS.

The programme was attended by District Medical and Health Officer P. Jagadishwara Rao, District Coordinator of Hospital Services Dr. Narendra Singh, Additional District Coordinator Satyaveni, and officials from various departments. Their presence underscored the multi-departmental approach needed to address HIV/AIDS in the district.

HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health concern in India, with thousands of new infections reported each year. Experts say that awareness and early testing are critical to curbing the epidemic. Stigma and discrimination often prevent people from getting tested or seeking treatment, which worsens outcomes and facilitates further transmission.

The Collector's appeal aligns with national and state efforts to achieve the goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Public awareness campaigns, community engagement, and accessible healthcare services are essential components of this strategy. Officials hope that the new materials will encourage more people to learn about HIV prevention and to support those affected by the virus.
