Pune Garbage Depot Collapse: Death Toll Rises to 9 After 83-Hour Rescue Op Ends
The 83-hour rescue operation at Pune's Moshi garbage depot concluded in the early hours of Sunday, with the recovery of the body of the last missing employee, Waman Kasbe, around 1 am. The death toll has risen to nine.
The ground-plus-two-storey building, which housed the administrative offices of a waste-to-energy plant, collapsed on Wednesday afternoon after a massive mound of legacy waste slid onto the structure. The facility is operated by a private firm under an agreement with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
Families of the victims are demanding answers, alleging administrative apathy and delayed rescue efforts. The incident has raised concerns over safety standards at waste processing facilities and the oversight of private operators.
Authorities have ordered a probe into the collapse. The civic body has yet to release a detailed report on the cause of the landslide of waste.
