Puducherry re-allots 51 acres to JIPMER for ₹1,000-crore trauma, transplant centres
The Puducherry government has re-allotted approximately 51 acres of land in Sedarapet to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) for the establishment of a Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation with an air ambulance facility and a Centre for Organ Transplantation. The combined investment for the two projects is around ₹1,000 crore.
According to a release from JIPMER, the land was originally allotted to the institute in 2018 for developing advanced healthcare and academic facilities. Preparatory work had begun, but the project underwent administrative revision after the government took back the land in 2022. The re-allotment was formalised on Tuesday (June 23, 2026), with Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy handing over the documents.
The Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation, with an estimated investment of ₹425 crore, will be built on 25.4 acres. It will have a capacity of 250 beds, including intensive care units, high-dependency units, trauma bays, emergency observation wards, rehabilitation services, and 10 advanced operation theatres. A dedicated helipad will enable air ambulance operations for rapid transport of critically injured patients. The centre aims to bring together trauma surgery, emergency medicine, critical care, rehabilitation, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, psychiatry, and allied specialities under one roof.
JIPMER already serves as a referral centre for trauma patients from Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and neighbouring states. The new centre is expected to additionally function as a national hub for training, research, trauma prevention, disaster preparedness, and manpower development in trauma and emergency medicine.
The Centre for Organ Transplantation, with a capital outlay of ₹550 crore, is envisioned as a comprehensive regional hub for organ and tissue transplantation. It will have 400 beds, including specialised transplant wards, intensive care units, high-dependency units, advanced diagnostic facilities, and 14 operation theatres. The centre will support both deceased and living donor transplantation programmes, with dedicated divisions for kidney, liver, heart, lung, bone marrow, and reconstructive tissue transplantation. It will also function as a regional hub for organ sharing, transplant coordination, organ and tissue banking, advanced training, and translational research.
The project is expected to create around 3,000 direct employment opportunities and hundreds of indirect jobs, positioning the Sedarapet campus as a major healthcare, education, research, and economic hub in Puducherry.
