Public Service Earns Respect, Not Just Votes: Vice President to New Rajya Sabha MPs
Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on Saturday inaugurated a two-day orientation programme for newly-elected Members of Parliament (MPs) in New Delhi. Addressing the gathering, he underscored that elections may be won through votes, but lasting respect is earned only through dedicated public service.
During the programme, which aims to familiarise new MPs with parliamentary procedures and their constitutional duties, Radhakrishnan urged members to remain committed to the people and the Constitution. He stated, “Debates, discussions or even disruptions, it must always lead to a decision.” This remark highlights the expectation that parliamentary proceedings should ultimately result in productive outcomes for the nation.
According to an official statement, Radhakrishnan further emphasised that “every question asked, every law enacted, every policy framed, and every debate participated in has the potential to transform lives.” His comments serve as a reminder of the impact legislators can have on the daily lives of citizens.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh also addressed the MPs, reinforcing their duty to hold the government accountable. He noted that MPs have the “right to hold government accountable, offer constructive criticism, guide the government onto the right path,” as per the statement. This reflects the parliamentary principle of checks and balances.
The orientation programme is a routine exercise conducted for new Rajya Sabha members to help them understand the rules of the House, committee assignments, and the ethical responsibilities of public office. The Vice President’s remarks come at a time when public trust in political institutions is a key concern for many democracies.
