Prashant Kishor to Contest Bankipur Bypoll: A Defining Battle for JSP and BJP

Eight months after the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) failed to win any seat in the Bihar Assembly elections, party founder Prashant Kishor is likely to make his electoral debut in the Bankipur Assembly bypoll scheduled for July 30.

According to JSP insiders, Kishor, who did not contest a seat in the party's first Assembly election in November 2025, is now set to contest the prestigious Bankipur constituency in Bihar. The seat was vacated by BJP national president Nitin Nabin after his elevation to the party's top post and subsequent election to the Rajya Sabha.

The Bankipur seat, located within Patna, has been a BJP stronghold since 1995. It was held first by Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha and later by his son Nitin Nabin, who won the seat five times. The bypoll is expected to be a high-stakes contest, with the BJP likely to mount a strong campaign to retain its bastion.

While the JSP's core committee will make a formal announcement about its candidate on July 5, sources said the party leadership is pushing for Kishor's candidature. JSP state president Manoj Bharati told reporters: 'The Jan Suraaj Party has decided to field a candidate in the Bankipur by-election. The formal announcement will be made on July 5. Distressed by the BJP's misgovernance, the people of Bankipur are demanding that Prashant Kishor ji contest.'

The BJP has yet to name its candidate, but insiders said Neel Ranjan Ghosh, a veteran party worker close to Nabin, is the front-runner. The Opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Mahagathbandhan has also not announced its candidate.

What is at stake for the BJP?

For the BJP, Bankipur has been a party stronghold for nearly three decades. The bypoll will be the first major electoral test for Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who replaced Nitish Kumar in April. A loss, or even a reduced victory margin, could dent his political authority and give the Opposition ammunition to challenge his leadership. Additionally, as the seat was vacated by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, losing his home turf could be an embarrassing psychological blow for the party at the national level.

Bankipur's dominant Kayastha voting bloc and trader groups form the bedrock of the BJP's urban identity in Bihar. The party needs to demonstrate that its core urban voters remain loyal despite the change in state leadership.

What is at stake for the JSP?

For Prashant Kishor and the JSP, the bypoll is a critical opportunity for a political comeback. In the Bihar elections, the party fielded candidates in 238 of 243 seats but failed to win any, securing only 3.4% of the vote share. Bankipur offers a chance to change the narrative from 'just hype' to a 'possible alternative'.

If Kishor contests, his personal political capital will be on the line. He has called the bypoll a 'referendum on the backdoor entry of Samrat Choudhary as CM'. A win or a strong second-place finish by fracturing the BJP's base could establish the JSP as a player in state politics. However, a poor showing may relegate the party to the margins in Bihar's crowded political landscape.

Kishor has spent years building a grassroots network for the JSP, focusing on rural Bihar through foot marches. Convincing educated, traditionally pro-BJP urban voters in Patna to experiment with a new party will be a major test of his strategy.
