Prashant Kishor Accuses Police of Voter Intimidation in Bankipur Bypoll, Files Complaint
Patna: Political strategist Prashant Kishor on Wednesday filed a complaint alleging voter intimidation and misuse of police powers during the Bankipur assembly bypoll, escalating tensions in the high-stakes electoral contest.
Kishor, who has been actively campaigning in Bihar through his Jan Suraaj initiative, claimed that voters were being pressured and that police personnel were acting in a biased manner, potentially influencing the outcome of the election.
In his complaint, Kishor specifically alleged that "police powers were misused" to create an atmosphere of fear among voters. He did not name any individual or party but urged the Election Commission to intervene and ensure a free and fair polling process.
The Bankipur bypoll, necessitated by the resignation of sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Nitin Nabin, is being closely watched as a test of political strength in Bihar. The constituency, a stronghold of the BJP, is witnessing a multi-cornered contest involving major parties.
Election officials have said they are examining the complaint and will take appropriate action. A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain order and that no specific incident of intimidation has been reported so far.
Kishor's allegations have added to the charged atmosphere in the constituency, with rival political groups trading accusations. The Jan Suraaj leader has been vocal about electoral reforms and has repeatedly called for transparent processes to uphold democratic values.
The Election Commission has assured that CCTV monitoring and flying squads are active in the area to address any malpractices. Voters, meanwhile, are encouraged to report any coercive behavior to the helpline.
