PM Modi Pays Tribute to Pandavani Legend Teejan Bai: 'An Irreplaceable Loss'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief over the passing of renowned Pandavani singer Teejan Bai, calling it an 'irreplaceable loss to the world of art and culture'. The 66-year-old folk artist, who was awarded the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, died at a hospital in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, after a prolonged illness.

In a tweet, PM Modi said: 'Teejan Bai Ji was a icon of Indian folk music. Her powerful renditions of the Mahabharata through Pandavani captivated audiences worldwide. Her demise is an irreplaceable loss to our art and culture. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.'

Born in 1956 in a small village in Chhattisgarh, Teejan Bai defied social norms by taking up Pandavani, a traditional narrative singing style that was largely male-dominated. She went on to perform in over 20 countries and received numerous national and international accolades. Her signature style involved dynamic body movements and rhythmic clapping, bringing the epic tales to life.

Union Minister for Culture G. Kishan Reddy also paid homage, stating that her contributions to preserving and popularising tribal and folk heritage will be remembered forever. The Chhattisgarh government has declared a two-day state mourning in her honour.

Teejan Bai's funeral took place in her village with full state honours. Thousands of fans, artists, and dignitaries attended to pay their last respects. She is survived by three children.
