PM Modi embarks on Seychelles visit for Golden Jubilee celebrations, bilateral talks
Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Seychelles on Saturday, June 27, 2026, for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and participating in the island nation's golden jubilee National Day celebrations.
In a departure statement, Modi described Seychelles as a valued maritime neighbour and a key partner in India's 'Vision MAHASAGAR' initiative, which focuses on mutual growth and security in the Indian Ocean region. He also highlighted the shared commitment to the Global South.
The visit, from June 27 to 29, comes at the invitation of Seychelles President Patrick Herminie. Modi will attend the National Day golden jubilee celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. Modi noted that the ties are rooted in mutual trust, shared democratic values, and deep people-to-people connections.
During his stay, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with President Herminie. He said he looks forward to advancing cooperation for the progress of both nations and promoting security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.
In a historic first, Modi will address the National Assembly of Seychelles, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. He said this reflects the strong democratic and parliamentary traditions that bind the two countries.
Modi also plans to interact with the Indian diaspora in Seychelles, whom he described as a living bridge between the two nations.
A contingent of the Indian armed forces, along with two Indian Navy ships, will participate in the National Day celebrations. Modi last visited Seychelles in 2015.
The visit builds on President Herminie's state visit to India in February 2026. Officials said it aims to deepen maritime cooperation and advance a shared vision for a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
