PM Modi and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Discuss Peace, Trade at G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian-Les-Bains, France. The leaders discussed bilateral cooperation and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with Mr. Modi reiterating India's commitment to peace and humanity.

In a post on X, Mr. Modi said India will “always be” on the side of peace, placing the values of humanity over everything else. He noted that India and Ukraine have been engaging extensively in recent times, reflected in various areas of cooperation.

The talks focused on reviewing different aspects of their partnership. Both leaders agreed that trade ties need to be restored to pre-war levels. The meeting took place as the G7 summit addressed broader global issues, including security risks posed by artificial intelligence and social media.

The Indian Prime Minister's remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. India has maintained a neutral stance, calling for dialogue and diplomacy while refraining from condemning Russia. This position has been consistent since the start of the war in February 2022.

Mr. Zelenskyy has been seeking international support for Ukraine's defence and reconstruction. The meeting with Mr. Modi is part of a series of bilateral engagements at the summit. No joint statement was issued following the talks.
