Parliament Stalemate on Day 5: Opposition Seeks Unconditional NEET Debate, Govt Promises Bill

The ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament entered its fifth day on Friday, July 24, 2026, with both Houses failing to transact any substantial business since the session began on July 20. Repeated adjournments and disruptions have marked the proceedings, as Opposition MPs demand a full-fledged discussion on the NEET paper leak issue and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Opposition of attaching “pre-conditions” to the debate, claiming they are avoiding a constructive discussion. He stated that the government is ready to present its viewpoint on the matter. In a late-night video message on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that the Cabinet would discuss the NEET paper leak on Friday, and a Bill addressing the issue would be introduced in Parliament next week.

The revised list of business for the Lok Sabha includes a debate on the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, for consideration and passage. Additionally, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is scheduled to present several critical reports.

Both the ruling NDA and the Opposition INDIA bloc have engaged in protests within the Parliament House complex, contributing to the deadlock. The Opposition insists on a discussion without any prior conditions, while the government maintains that it is ready for a debate on the floor of the House.
