Pakistan Crosses Border: Airstrikes and Ground Troops Enter Afghanistan After Karachi Attack

On [date], Pakistan launched airstrikes and deployed ground troops into Afghanistan’s Kunar province, following a deadly terrorist attack in Karachi. The attack, which targeted a police post and killed at least five personnel, was blamed by Pakistani authorities on militants operating from Afghan soil.

Pakistan’s military stated that the cross-border operation targeted hideouts of the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militant groups. Officials claimed the strikes successfully eliminated several terrorists and destroyed infrastructure used for planning attacks inside Pakistan.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government condemned the incursion as a violation of its sovereignty. A spokesperson called for dialogue and warned that such actions could destabilise the region.

This is not the first time Pakistan has conducted operations across the Durand Line, the disputed border. Tensions have escalated since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, as Pakistan accuses the Afghan government of harbouring TTP fighters. The TTP has intensified attacks on Pakistani security forces, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The incident underscores the fragile security situation in the region. Analysts note that unilateral military actions risk further straining bilateral relations and could undermine efforts to combat terrorism collectively.

Both nations have historically accused each other of supporting militant groups. Afghanistan has often denied providing safe havens to TTP fighters, urging Pakistan to address domestic grievances.

As of now, no official statement has been issued by the Afghan government on casualties from the airstrikes. Human rights groups have expressed concern over civilian casualties in such operations.

This development comes amid international efforts to encourage peaceful resolution of disputes between the two neighbours. The United Nations has called for restraint and adherence to international law.
