Orange Alert in Mumbai, Thane as Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging, Train Delays

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, warning of intense rainfall over the next 24 hours. The alert comes after several parts of Mumbai recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8 a.m. on Wednesday (July 1, 2026).

Heavy downpours led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, including the Andheri subway, prompting traffic diversions. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses continued operations normally, but suburban train services on the Central Railway and Western Railway experienced delays.

On the Harbour line, which connects Navi Mumbai with parts of Mumbai, services were disrupted after an overhead wire snapped between 4.52 a.m. and 5.45 a.m., affecting local train movements. Authorities worked to restore services and advised commuters to plan their journeys accordingly.

An orange alert indicates moderate to heavy rainfall, with the possibility of localised flooding, traffic congestion, and disruption to essential services. The IMD has urged residents to stay cautious and follow safety advisories.

Mumbai's civic body has deployed pumps and teams to clear waterlogging, while the police have set up diversions to manage traffic. No major injuries or damage have been reported so far.
