Orange Alert for Mumbai, Red Alert Tomorrow as Northeast Floods Affect 1.3 Lakh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts of Thane and Raigad, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday. A red alert has been issued for Mumbai on Thursday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Sindhudurg and Palghar are under a yellow alert with heavy rainfall expected.

These alerts come as parts of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh brace for very heavy showers in the coming days, according to the IMD's latest bulletin. While the monsoon has been active, rainfall deficits persist nationwide.

In June, India recorded a 40 per cent rainfall deficit, with actual rainfall being only about 60 per cent of the normal. The IMD had predicted 92 per cent of the long-period average for June. However, the month turned out to be the fifth driest June since 1901, when rainfall records began. July is also expected to see below-normal precipitation, less than 94 per cent of the long-period average.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in northeastern states remains grim. In Arunachal Pradesh, over 90,000 people across 12 districts have been affected, with four deaths and 21 injuries reported. In Assam, more than 46,000 people in six districts have been hit by floods, with one death reported. Union ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Kiren Rijiju conducted an aerial and ground assessment of the flood-ravaged Keyi Panyor district in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday.

The IMD continues to monitor weather conditions and provides updates for cities across India, including temperature, humidity, and forecasts. Authorities advise residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions and stay informed about weather warnings.
