Opposition MPs Stage Protest in Parliament Over Alleged Police Excesses on Students

New Delhi, July 2026: Opposition Members of Parliament, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest inside the Parliament House complex on Monday. They demanded an apology from Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police excesses against students who were demonstrating against the NEET paper leak.

Carrying placards and a large banner, several MPs gathered in front of the steps of Makar Dwar of Parliament. They raised slogans seeking answers from the Home Minister regarding the treatment of student protesters. The protest was joined by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's Mahua Maji, among others.

Later, MPs from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) held a separate protest demanding a complete ban on the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), which is conducted for admission to medical courses. The Congress-led opposition has indicated it will continue to pressure the government in Parliament over the issue, demanding action against those responsible for the assault on students and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The protests come in the backdrop of widespread student agitations across the country following leaks in the NEET examination. The opposition has accused the government of mishandling the situation and using excessive force against peaceful demonstrators. The government, however, has maintained that it is committed to ensuring the integrity of examinations and has taken necessary steps to prevent such incidents.

The monsoon session of Parliament, which began last week, has seen frequent disruptions over the issue. The opposition has given adjournment notices and pressed for a discussion under a rule that entails voting. The government has so far resisted the demand, stating that it is ready to discuss the matter but not under circumstances that would force a vote.

Speaker Om Birla has appealed for cooperation to ensure the smooth functioning of the House. The opposition remains firm on its demand for a statement from the Home Minister and a thorough investigation into the police action.
