Opposition MPs protest over Ram Temple fund allegations; Pappu Yadav demands accountability

New Delhi: Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, along with other Opposition members, staged a symbolic protest on Parliament premises on Tuesday over allegations of financial irregularities at the Ram Temple Trust. The protest included a mock skit aimed at drawing attention to what the MPs described as a 'theft' of donations meant for the temple.

Speaking to reporters, Yadav said the protest was a response to the alleged mishandling of funds at the temple, which he termed a 'betrayal of the faith of crores of devotees'. He specifically questioned the lack of action against the treasurer of the Ram Temple Trust, who has been accused in the matter. 'Why has the treasurer not been arrested? He is associated with the RSS. The committee members have committed the theft, and this has made devotees feel cheated,' Yadav alleged.

The Independent MP also criticised the government's silence on the issue. 'They say they brought Lord Ram with the temple, but now when a theft has happened at the temple, they are quiet,' he said, adding that the protest was symbolic and that all Opposition members were standing for the protection of Sanatan Dharma.

Yadav clarified that his protest was not against faith or the temple itself, but against individuals who, he claimed, were exploiting devotion for personal gain. 'God does not belong only to the RSS, and the treasurer of the Ram Temple Trust cannot be God,' he remarked.

The skit, performed by Yadav and other Opposition MPs, was a form of political theatre meant to highlight the issue within the premises of Parliament. Such demonstrations are common in India's democratic setup, allowing legislators to raise public grievances in a symbolic manner.

It is important to note that the allegations made by Yadav and the Opposition have not been independently verified. The Ram Temple Trust and the government have not yet issued an official response to these claims. The treasurer in question has not been formally charged, and the matter remains a subject of political debate rather than a judicial finding.

The Ram Temple in Ayodhya, inaugurated in January 2024, has been a significant political and religious milestone for the country. The trust managing the temple was constituted to oversee its construction and operations. Donations for the temple were collected from millions of devotees across India and abroad.

Opposition parties have frequently raised questions about transparency in the management of temple funds. However, such allegations have often been dismissed by supporters of the government as politically motivated attempts to undermine a major achievement.

Yadav, who represents the Purnea constituency in Bihar, has been known for his outspoken style and has often used unconventional methods to draw attention to issues. His latest protest adds to a series of demonstrations by Opposition MPs on matters ranging from price rise to alleged misuse of central agencies.

As Parliament continues its session, the Opposition is likely to press for a discussion on the matter. Whether the government will respond to these allegations remains to be seen. For now, the protest has brought the issue of temple fund management back into the public discourse, even as the political arguments over it continue.
