Opera's New 'Paste Protect' Feature Shields Users from Clipboard Cyber Attacks
Opera, the Norway-based browser developer, announced on Thursday a new in-browser security feature called 'Paste Protect'. The feature is designed to protect users from clipboard-based cyber attacks, including hijacking and pastejacking. It addresses the rising threat of ClickFix-style attacks, which according to Opera accounted for over half of malware-loading cyber attacks in 2025.
Paste Protect is built directly into Opera's desktop browsers and is enabled by default, requiring no manual setup. This makes Opera one of the first browsers to offer native protection against clipboard-based threats. The feature works by monitoring clipboard access and blocking malicious attempts to capture or alter copied data.
Cybersecurity researchers have noted that the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in browsers could lower barriers for attackers. AI browser agents, such as Perplexity's Comet or ChatGPT Atlas, are particularly vulnerable to indirect prompt injection attacks. Paste Protect aims to mitigate such risks at the browser level.
The launch comes as online threats evolve, with clipboard attacks becoming more common. By integrating this safeguard, Opera seeks to enhance user security without compromising convenience.
