OpenAI Launches GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work for Professional Tasks
OpenAI, on Thursday, July 9, announced its latest family of artificial intelligence models — GPT-5.6 — along with ChatGPT Work, a new workspace designed for professional tasks. The platform aims to help users complete complex assignments such as coding, research, document creation, website building, and presentations from a single interface.
The move marks OpenAI's strongest push yet to position ChatGPT as a productivity platform rather than merely a conversational chatbot. GPT-5.6 is offered in three variants: Sol, Terra, and Luna, each with distinct performance, speed, and cost profiles.
The company, led by Sam Altman, claims the models deliver improvements in reasoning, coding, scientific problem-solving, and agentic capabilities. The variants allow developers and enterprises to choose between speed, intelligence, and efficiency as needed. OpenAI also confirmed that GPT-5.6 is now the preferred model powering Microsoft 365 Copilot.
