OpenAI hires ex-Uber India boss Prabhjeet Singh to lead Indian operations

OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director for India, one of the company's top-priority markets, according to a statement released on Friday (June 26, 2026).

Mr. Singh will be OpenAI's most senior leader in India, responsible for consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations. His focus will include building partnerships and supporting India's wider AI ecosystem, while helping more consumers, businesses, institutions, and government bodies benefit from AI.

"OpenAI can confirm that Prabhjeet Singh will join as Managing Director for India in September. He will report to Kiran Mani, Managing Director for APAC (Asia Pacific)," the company said.

The appointment is part of OpenAI's continued investment in India, which the company considers a priority market. Mr. Singh joins OpenAI from Uber, where he served as President of India and South Asia, leading the mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

He is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad.

OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has stepped up its India push, deepening partnerships with businesses and the developer community, as it bets on one of the fastest-growing markets for artificial intelligence adoption. Mr. Altman has described AI adoption in India as "amazing" and said the company is excited to invest more. OpenAI announced its first office in New Delhi in November 2025.

During the India AI Summit in February this year, Mr. Altman praised India's speed of tech adoption. "What's happening in India with AI is really quite amazing," he said. He commended India's "conviction" to invest across the entire AI stack, from infrastructure to models to applications, and indicated that India's tech ecosystem is on the verge of a major AI-driven entrepreneurial explosion.
