NMC Issues Conditional Renewal to 800+ Medical Colleges, Introduces Surprise Inspections

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued conditional renewal letters to over 800 medical colleges for MBBS seats, overhauling its inspection system. Instead of routine annual inspections, the regulator will now conduct surprise assessments, with institutions given 45 days to rectify deficiencies before follow-up evaluations.

The move marks a significant shift in medical college monitoring. For the 2026-27 academic session, the NMC has granted conditional renewals, allowing colleges to continue admissions while making renewal subject to subsequent physical, virtual or hybrid assessments by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).

Under the standardised Letter of Renewal, colleges must clear all infrastructure, faculty and clinical deficiencies within 45 days. If deficiencies are found during MARB assessments, the Board will initiate action.

“We have shifted from annual renewal inspections to conditional renewal followed by random assessments. Colleges have been given an opportunity to rectify deficiencies, but if shortcomings persist during subsequent MARB assessments, appropriate regulatory action will follow,” MARB president Prof MK Ramesh said.

The new mechanism aims to avoid disruption of academic activities while enabling continuous oversight. Unlike the earlier system where institutions prepared for scheduled inspections, colleges will now be expected to remain compliant throughout the academic year.

Officials noted that deficiencies commonly relate to infrastructure, faculty availability and clinical load. Depending on the severity of violations, the Commission may reduce student intake, withdraw seats or suspend admissions.

The regulator has standardised the renewal letter format, replacing varied formats. This move aims for greater uniformity and transparency. The new framework is expected to discourage temporary compliance before inspections and ensure institutions maintain prescribed standards consistently.
