Kerala: Landslip Blocks Palchuram Ghat Road, Traffic to Wayanad Diverted

A landslip near Chekuthanthodu Road at Palchuram in Kannur district disrupted traffic on the Palchuram ghat road to Wayanad on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. The incident occurred at around 9.10 a.m., when a large volume of soil and rocks fell onto the road, blocking vehicular movement.

On receiving reports, District Collector P. Vishnuraj directed officials to begin clearing the debris immediately. Police, Fire and Rescue Services personnel and revenue officials reached the spot and commenced necessary measures. As heavy rain continues in the region, authorities warned of the possibility of further landslips and urged people to exercise caution. The Collector advised visitors and vehicles not needed for official purposes to avoid approaching the landslide site.

In view of the disruption, the police have instructed vehicles that normally use the Palchuram route to take the Nedumpoyil-Periya ghat road instead. The diversion will remain in place until the clearance work is completed and the road is declared safe for passage.

Meanwhile, several other parts of Kannur district reported rain-related incidents. The Karayangode river at Cherupuzha overflowed, inundating agricultural land. Water also entered areas around Kuppam CH Nagar, near Taliparamba, reportedly stranding children who were returning from a Nabidinam procession. According to reports, local residents aided in moving them to safety.

A landslip was also suspected at Cholamala in Moonamkunnu, Alakode, where rock, soil and mud reportedly flowed down the hill, and water levels in the nearby river rose. A possible landslip in the Karnataka forest area was also reported.

At Elayavoor, a landslip occurred near a national highway construction site close to residential properties. A retaining wall also collapsed, causing concern among local residents. Revenue Minister Sunny Joseph visited the affected area and said the landslip appeared to have been caused by unscientific construction practices. He called for an expert assessment of the site to determine the exact cause and suggest remedial measures.

The Palchuram ghat road is a key arterial route connecting Kannur with Wayanad, and its disruption impacts not only passenger traffic but also the movement of essential goods. The district administration has been on alert, with teams monitoring vulnerable areas. Kerala has been experiencing intense monsoon rainfall over the past few days, and landslips in the hilly regions have become a recurring concern. Authorities have advised residents living in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant and to follow safety precautions issued by the district administration. The alternative route via Nedumpoyil-Periya is expected to be longer, and commuters have been advised to plan their journeys accordingly.
