NIA Charges Hafiz Saeed with Masterminding Pahalgam Terror Attack
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed, accusing him of plotting the 2023 Pahalgam terror attack that killed seven tourists. The chargesheet, submitted to a special court in New Delhi, alleges that Saeed directed the attack from Pakistan as part of a larger conspiracy to destabilise Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the NIA, the attack was carried out by LeT operatives who infiltrated from across the border. The chargesheet names Saeed as the mastermind, citing intercepted communications and statements from arrested accomplices. The agency also accused Saeed of providing financial and logistical support to the attackers.
Hafiz Saeed, a UN-designated terrorist, is currently serving a prison sentence in Pakistan for terrorism financing. India has repeatedly called for his extradition. The NIA chargesheet is part of India's ongoing investigation into cross-border terrorism and aims to hold Saeed accountable for attacks on Indian soil.
The Pahalgam attack occurred in June 2023, when heavily armed men opened fire on a bus carrying tourists, killing seven and injuring several others. The attack was widely condemned, and the NIA took over the investigation within days. Since then, the agency has arrested multiple suspects, including local overground workers.
The chargesheet also names other LeT leaders and commanders, but the focus remains on Saeed's direct involvement. Legal experts say that while the chargesheet is a significant step, securing a conviction will require international cooperation and evidence from Pakistan. The case is expected to be heard in a closed trial due to its sensitive nature.
The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism and has urged the international community to take action against Pakistan-based terror groups. The chargesheet against Saeed is seen as a move to build a legal case that can be pursued through diplomatic channels for his extradition.
