NHRC Asked to Probe Alleged Police Misconduct During NEET Protest at Jantar Mantar
New Delhi: A complaint has been lodged with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking an independent inquiry into the alleged use of excessive force by Delhi Police against students protesting at Jantar Mantar on July 20. The protest was related to the NEET-UG exam paper leak.
The complainant, Congress member and advocate Virender Vashist, alleges that male police personnel misconducted themselves towards female students and that the force used was disproportionate and excessive. He states that the students were exercising their fundamental rights under the Constitution.
The complaint argues that the incident has caused widespread concern and that an impartial investigation is necessary to uphold the rule of law. It requests the NHRC to direct its investigation division to conduct an inquiry, visit Jantar Mantar to interact with affected students and witnesses, record statements of female students, and collect relevant evidence such as CCTV footage, body-camera recordings, deployment records, and medical reports.
Furthermore, the complaint urges the NHRC to recommend appropriate action against any officials found responsible and to recommend compensation for the victims.
The NHRC is yet to respond to the complaint. The Delhi Police have not issued an official statement regarding the allegations at the time of reporting.
