New Zealand tsunami warning after 5.9 magnitude earthquake hits South Island
New Zealand authorities issued a tsunami warning on Thursday (July 16, 2026) after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the western coast of the South Island, urging residents to move immediately to higher ground.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said people in affected areas should make their way to the 'nearest high ground, out of tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible'.
The quake was at a depth of 53 kilometres, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The agency initially reported the earthquake as magnitude 5.6 with a depth of 10 kilometres, but later revised it.
No immediate reports of damage or casualties were available. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide updates through official channels.
