NEET-UG 2027: Computer-Based Exam Over 5-6 Days, NTA Revamp Planned

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG) will be conducted as a computer-based test starting from 2027, spread over five to six days at approximately 1,000 centres in 500 cities, primarily in government institutions such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, according to sources. Each day will accommodate about 5 lakh candidates.

The Ministry of Education is also planning a comprehensive overhaul of the National Testing Agency (NTA), the autonomous body responsible for conducting NEET-UG and other entrance exams. The revamp will cover the agency’s organisation, infrastructure, technology, and processes. Sources indicated that the entire organisation will be changed 'from top to bottom', with completion expected before October. The NTA has around 150 sanctioned posts.

These changes come in the wake of the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 exam, which saw a paper leak that led to the cancellation of the first exam held on May 3, 2024, in which about 22 lakh candidates appeared. The incident triggered outrage, protests, and a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
