NDA Allies Unite in Uttar Pradesh, Aim to Repeat 2017 Assembly Victory
BJP leaders and their National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners in Uttar Pradesh have resolved to work together to replicate the coalition's performance in the 2017 state assembly elections. This came after a series of meetings on Sunday (July 5, 2026) led by BJP president Nitin Nabin, who is on a two-day visit to Lucknow.
Mr. Nabin began his day with a meeting over tea with former BJP state presidents, where they discussed election strategy for the 2027 assembly polls, according to party sources. Later, he is scheduled to hold separate meetings with Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak at their residences.
The BJP chief will also chair a joint meeting of NDA constituents in the state, including leaders from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Nishad Party, and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), among others.
Speaking after the meeting with former state presidents, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya expressed confidence that the BJP would form the government for a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. “The people of Uttar Pradesh do not want goonda raj, mafia raj, dynastic politics or riots. They want development, good governance and security,” he said. He also warned that if the Samajwadi Party returns to power, it would “crush people, intimidate them” and lead to land grabbing.
Mr. Maurya added, “A developed India and a developed Uttar Pradesh by 2047 is our goal, and for the next 21 years, the Samajwadi Party will not even be close to power.” Regarding the meeting with Mr. Nabin, he said, “We discussed that the government and the organisation will work together to repeat the 2017 performance and secure an even bigger victory in 2027. All our NDA allies will remain united.”
Former state president and Uttar Pradesh minister Swatantra Dev Singh emphasised the party's message of taking welfare schemes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to every village. He described the BJP as a cadre-based party that derives strength from its workers, who “rise above casteism, regionalism, individualism, family rule and dynastic politics, and are guided by nationalism.”
Another former president, Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, highlighted the party's engagement with alliance partners. “We work closely with our alliance partners, address their concerns and remain engaged with them through regular discussions. I am confident that we will continue to uphold this spirit within the NDA alliance.” When asked about the BJP's below-par performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections being discussed, he pointed to the subsequent bypoll results where the BJP won all seats, and said, “A negative agenda does not succeed repeatedly. I am confident that the BJP will secure an even bigger mandate in UP than it did in 2017.”
Alliance partners also expressed their commitment. RLD national general secretary Trilok Tyagi said the allies would ensure the NDA's victory in 2027, adding that seat-sharing would be discussed in the meeting. Nishad Party president Sanjay Nishad said deliberations would centre on securing a “historic victory” by succeeding on all seats, strengthening the organisation, and taking the alliance's ideology to the people. SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar said the meeting would discuss ways to improve upon the NDA's 2017 assembly election performance and that they are preparing for all 403 assembly seats.
