Nazrul Borsho: India, Bangladesh Discuss Deeper Cultural Cooperation
India and Bangladesh have agreed to deepen their cultural cooperation, with a special focus on the year-long observance of Nazrul Borsho, which commemorates the 127th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh's national poet. The decision emerged during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladesh's Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury in Dhaka on Sunday (September 6, 2026).
Minister of State for Cultural Affairs Ali Nawaz Mahmud Khayyam also attended the meeting. According to a social media post by the Indian High Commission, the talks highlighted the "deep-rooted cultural connection" between the peoples of the two countries and underscored the importance of strengthening cultural engagement between the neighbours.
The Indian mission said the two sides discussed potential cooperation and exchanges in various fields, including classical music, folk art, heritage conservation, institutional linkages, and joint cultural programmes and conferences. These efforts are particularly aimed at promoting people-to-people ties as part of the Nazrul Borsho celebrations.
Nazrul Borsho, or Nazrul Year, is being observed in Bangladesh from May 25, 2026, to May 25, 2027. The period marks the 127th anniversary of the birth of Kazi Nazrul Islam, who was born in 1899 in Churulia, now in West Bengal, India. Known as the "Bidrohi Kobi" (Rebel Poet), Nazrul used his literary and musical works to advocate freedom, equality, and resistance to oppression and communalism. His writings had a profound impact on the cultural and political life of Bengal during the Indian freedom movement.
In West Bengal, Nazrul's birth anniversary is officially commemorated each year. The Nazrul Academy in Churulia works to preserve his legacy, and his compositions—collectively known as Nazrul Geeti—remain an integral part of Bengal's musical tradition. His poetry has also been translated into multiple languages, giving him a global readership.
The year-long observance of Nazrul Borsho is intended to shine a light on his literary, musical, and cultural contributions, with programmes planned across Bangladesh and internationally. The observance also serves as an occasion for India and Bangladesh to celebrate their shared cultural heritage and to strengthen civilisational bonds.
