Myanmar assures India: 'No territory use against Indian interests' at border security talks

NEW DELHI: India and Myanmar concluded a two-day national-level meeting on Thursday, with both sides reviewing the security situation along their border. Myanmar assured India that it will not permit its territory to be used against India’s security interests.

The 23rd meeting was led by Indian Home Secretary Govind Mohan and the Myanmar delegation by Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Major General Min Thu. Discussions centred on bilateral security cooperation and progress under the dialogue mechanism.

Talks focused on combating transnational crimes, including terrorism, insurgency, narcotics trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, wildlife trafficking, cybercrime, and other organised crimes. Both sides agreed to enhance intelligence sharing and operational coordination, and to undertake capacity-building initiatives.

Emphasising the need to maintain peace, stability, and security along the India-Myanmar border, both nations stressed the importance of preventing the misuse of sovereign territory for activities harmful to their security interests.

Mohan noted that Myanmar is a key partner in India's Neighbourhood First, Act East, and MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) policies. The two sides also discussed completing the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway.

India and Myanmar expressed satisfaction with the meeting's outcome and agreed to continue close engagement on security matters.
