Mumbai Under Red Alert as Heavy Rains Continue, LTT Station Waterlogged
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Thane, while the Konkan region and Pune are under an orange alert. The warning, issued at 7 p.m. on July 4, 2026, indicates that heavy rainfall is expected to persist with no immediate relief.
Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla experienced waterlogging on Saturday, adding to the disruptions caused by the relentless monsoon. On Sunday morning, rains continued to lash Mumbai, Thane, and Pune.
Maharashtra's Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan urged citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. 'More than 200mm of rain has occurred in 12 hours, which is very heavy for Mumbai. I request all tourists and sightseers to avoid going out. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed. Our teams are stationed near manholes, and traffic is being cleared. Most accidents happen due to selfies near high tide areas. Only step out if urgent,' he said.
The heavy downpour has caused multiple incidents, including tree falls that blocked key roads in the western suburbs. A tragic incident occurred when a tree fell on a school bus in Chembur, killing an 11-year-old student and injuring several others. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde warned citizens loitering along the Worli seafront, ignoring warnings, to leave the area immediately.
The Konkan region and Pune's ghat areas are at risk of minor landslides due to very heavy and persistent rainfall. Pune remains under a yellow alert. Authorities have deployed rescue teams to assist affected residents and clear waterlogged roads.
