Mumbai Floods: Red Alert, Road Closures, and Rail Delays as Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc

Mumbai and its metropolitan region experienced severe disruption on Saturday as torrential rain, a red alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), and high tides combined to flood roads, disrupt train and metro services, and force the closure of several key routes.

Between 8 am and 6 pm, parts of the city recorded over 200 mm of rainfall. According to data from the BMC and IMD, Vikhroli received 247 mm, Powai 240 mm, Chincholi 220 mm, and Andheri 208 mm. In Navi Mumbai, Airoli recorded 180 mm, Digha 155 mm, and Koparkhairne 143 mm. The Santacruz weather station logged 164 mm between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.

The Mogra nalla, a major drain flowing through Andheri east and west into the Arabian Sea via the Versova creek, began overflowing around noon. Its associated drains also overflowed, causing water to spill onto Andheri subway and adjoining roads such as SV Road and Link Road. Continuous rain prevented the floodwater from receding, leaving the area waterlogged for hours. The situation was worsened by a high tide of 4.26 metres at 2:50 pm.

Road closures were enforced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in suburbs including Andheri, Vikhroli, and Chembur. Traffic came to a standstill, and residents waded through knee-deep water in many areas.

Railway services on the Central and Western lines were delayed. On the Western line, waterlogging between Virar and Nalasopara caused delays of 15–20 minutes. Central Railway's main line between Kalyan and CSMT faced delays of 20–25 minutes, while Harbour line trains ran 10–15 minutes late. Metro services were also affected, though specific details were not provided.

The IMD has maintained a red alert for Mumbai and neighboring districts through Sunday, with heavy rain expected to continue until Monday morning before easing. Authorities advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The flooding highlights the recurring challenges Mumbai faces during the monsoon, with infrastructure often overwhelmed by intense rainfall. The BMC has deployed pumps and rescue teams, but waterlogging remains a persistent issue in low-lying areas.
