Mumbai Endures Fourth Day of Heavy Rainfall; Waterlogging Disrupts Traffic and Markets

Mumbai experienced its fourth consecutive day of heavy rainfall on Thursday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red nowcast warning at 7 am. Several parts of the city received over 200 mm of rain, leading to waterlogging in markets and residential areas, slowing vehicular and pedestrian movement, and disrupting business activities.

Data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) weather stations showed that between Wednesday and Thursday morning, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in Bhandup and Santacruz, each receiving 239 mm. Powai recorded 234 mm, while Andheri, Parel, and Mankhurd each received over 220 mm. Marol, Sewri, and Wadala also experienced significant rainfall, with totals exceeding 200 mm. The Santacruz weather station recorded 205 mm, and the Colaba coastal observatory received 158 mm by 8:30 am on Thursday.

The heavy downpour caused widespread waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas, leading to traffic jams on major roads and arterial routes. Commuters reported significant delays, with some choosing to work from home where possible. Local train services, the lifeline of the city, faced minor disruptions due to water on tracks, though authorities worked to minimize delays. Markets in affected areas saw reduced footfall, impacting small businesses and daily wage workers.

The IMD's red alert indicates the likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, urging residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel. The monsoon season in Mumbai typically brings such intense spells, but the frequency and intensity this week have raised concerns about infrastructure resilience. The BMC has deployed pumps and teams to clear waterlogging, but the continuous rain has overwhelmed drainage systems in some areas.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather warnings and take necessary precautions. The civic body has set up helplines for emergency assistance. As the rain continues, authorities are monitoring the situation closely, particularly in vulnerable areas prone to landslides and flooding.
