Bhogapuram airport's inaugural flight from Hyderabad marks start of operations
The newly constructed Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh is set to begin its commercial operations, with an Indigo flight from Hyderabad scheduled to be the first to land on the airport's opening day. The flight, Indigo 6E6408, is expected to touch down at 6:45 a.m., followed by Air India Express flight IX2064 from Bengaluru at 7:30 a.m.
According to officials, the inaugural day's schedule will begin at 6 a.m. with a lamp-lighting ceremony in the check-in hall area. This will be followed by the distribution of boarding passes and a ceremonial cake cutting involving airline staff and passengers.
Passengers on these first arrival flights will be welcomed with special goody bags containing miniature Etikoppaka toys, a traditional handicraft indigenous to the region, along with first-flight certificates. These tokens are meant to commemorate the occasion and highlight the local culture.
Authorities have advised that strict security measures will remain in force at the airport due to an Independence Day high alert that continues through August 20. Travellers are urged to cooperate with security personnel and follow all established procedures to ensure a smooth experience.
The airport, named after the freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, is expected to significantly improve connectivity for the northern coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh. It will link the region to major cities such as Hyderabad and Bengaluru, potentially boosting trade, tourism, and economic development in the area. The commencement of operations marks a major milestone for the region, which has been awaiting better air infrastructure for many years.
Initially, the airport's connecting routes will focus on linking it to these major hubs, with the possibility of more destinations being added in the future. The successful launch of services will be closely watched by the local population and business community, as it opens new opportunities for growth and integration with the rest of the country.
