Mumbai Airport Near-Miss: Air India Flight Aborts Takeoff After Runway Incursion
Mumbai narrowly avoided a potential runway collision on Tuesday night when an Air India flight aborted its departure after another aircraft was spotted on the same runway at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
According to an Air India spokesperson, the Delhi-bound flight stopped its takeoff roll after receiving instructions from Air Traffic Control (ATC) and returned to the bay. The aircraft subsequently underwent required inspections as per standard operating procedures.
The airline confirmed that no injuries or damage were reported. Alternative arrangements were made to fly passengers to Delhi at the earliest.
The incident involved an Air India flight and an Air India Express aircraft, both coming face-to-face on the runway. Authorities have not yet released details on how the two aircraft ended up on the same runway simultaneously. An investigation into the circumstances is expected.
Runway incursions, where aircraft or vehicles enter a runway without authorization, are rare but serious events in aviation. ATC protocols are designed to prevent such occurrences, and pilots are trained to respond to ATC instructions to avoid collisions. In this case, quick communication between ATC and the pilots prevented a potential accident.
The incident comes amid a busy travel season at Mumbai airport, which handles a high volume of domestic and international flights. Safety remains a top priority for Indian aviation authorities, who continuously monitor operations to ensure adherence to global standards.
