Motorcyclist killed in accident involving Minister Jagadeshwari's car; driver arrested
In a tragic incident in the early hours of Monday, a 26-year-old motorcyclist was killed after his two-wheeler was allegedly hit by a car at Kattankulathur junction, on the outskirts of Chennai. The police have identified the deceased as Iraiyanbu. He died on the spot as a result of the collision.
The car involved in the accident is registered in the name of Jagadeshwari K., who is the Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment in the Tamil Nadu government. Ms. Jagadeshwari, who hails from Virudhunagar, was on her way to Chennai to attend the State Legislative Assembly session. She was not travelling in the car at the time of the incident, according to preliminary information.
The Maraimalai Nagar Traffic Investigation Wing said the Minister was travelling in a separate government vehicle as part of a convoy. Her personal car, driven by Chinna Agni, a resident of Madurai, was also in the convoy. It was this personal car that allegedly struck the motorcycle ridden by the victim. The police have arrested the driver, Chinna Agni, and seized the car for further investigation.
A case has been registered against the driver under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Section 281 relates to rash and negligent driving that endangers human life, while Section 106(1) deals with the offence of causing death by negligence. The police are investigating whether the driver was at fault, whether the motorcyclist’s movements contributed to the crash, and the exact sequence of events.
The car is registered in the Minister’s name, but the police have clarified that she was not in the vehicle at the time. She was reportedly ahead in the government car. This clarification comes amid public interest in the case because of the Minister’s official position. No allegation has been made against the Minister at this stage, and the investigation is focused on the driver.
Officers from the Maraimalai Nagar Traffic Investigation Wing are conducting a detailed probe. They have collected evidence from the scene, including the vehicles involved, and are recording statements from possible witnesses. The police noted that the Kattankulathur junction is a busy crossing and have not ruled out any factors such as speed or visibility at the time of the incident.
Under standard legal procedure in such cases, the accused driver is expected to be produced before the jurisdictional magistrate. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination, according to police sources. Further details about the case are awaited as the investigation continues.
The Minister has not yet issued any public statement on the accident, and there has been no comment from her office. Her political party has also not reacted officially. The incident has drawn attention to road safety in the area, though authorities have not yet commented on the broader pattern of accidents on this stretch.
