Montreal Police Officer Killed in Hotel Shooting; Suspect Also Dead, Authorities Say

A Montreal police officer was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting at a Hilton hotel on Monday, June 22, 2026, according to Police Chief Fady Dagher. The suspect was shot dead by responding officers, he said.

A civilian also died in the incident, but it is not yet clear who fired the fatal shot. Chief Dagher described the event as a 'nightmare' and noted it was the first time in 24 years that a Montreal police officer had been killed in the line of duty.

Police received a call around 11:35 a.m. about a person brandishing a long gun from a window of the Hilton hotel in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. When officers arrived, they were targeted with gunfire. Video footage showed the suspect also outside the hotel.

The second officer injured in the shooting is in stable condition. Authorities are still investigating the suspect's motive.

Witness Jacob Coutu, who was working nearby, reported hearing initial gunshots followed by a large police response and further gunfire. He estimated hearing 30 to 40 shots in total.

Public safety officials issued an emergency alert about an armed and dangerous suspect, asking residents to shelter in place. The alert caused temporary closures of the Décarie expressway and sections of two subway lines. The alert was lifted shortly after 3 p.m., by which time the suspect was already dead, Chief Dagher confirmed.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
