Monsoon Rains Trigger Floods, Landslides in Jammu and Kashmir
Heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir led to flash floods and landslides in several districts, damaging roads, vehicles and property. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert as adverse weather continues.
A flash flood struck Thathri sub-division in Doda district overnight, causing extensive damage to houses, vehicles and other property. Rising water levels in local streams inundated the Thathri market, leaving debris and mud in residential areas. Several vehicles were damaged as roads and marketplaces flooded.
Residents reported that the flood occurred without warning, catching many by surprise. Authorities have begun damage assessment and relief operations.
Local residents alleged that debris from link road construction is routinely dumped into the Thathri stream, obstructing natural water flow and contributing to frequent flooding. They urged authorities to take preventive measures.
Incessant rainfall also damaged the Doda-Kishtwar highway, disrupting traffic. Officials said mud, boulders and debris covered the road, and a section was damaged, leading to suspension of traffic.
In Kishtwar district, heavy rain triggered a major landslide near the tunnel of the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project, adding to disruptions.
The administration had earlier issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, flash floods and landslides. People living near rivers and streams were advised to remain vigilant.
According to the Meteorological Department, Samba recorded the highest rainfall in the Jammu region in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am Monday, with 90 mm.
