Monsoon Fury: 10 Dead as Landslides and Floods Batter Uttarakhand, Himachal, J&K
Continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours has wreaked havoc across the Himalayan states, with landslides and flooding disrupting life and claiming at least 10 lives. In Uttarakhand, the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers are flowing in spate, while landslides have blocked over 100 roads, including national highways. The Baldi river near Sahastradhara in Dehradun district has risen alarmingly, submerging low-lying areas.
Himachal Pradesh remains under an orange alert, with devastating landslides reported in Kinnaur and Solan districts. Several roads have been closed, and rescue operations are underway. In Jammu & Kashmir, the situation is critical as rivers and streams overflow, causing flood-like conditions in Mendhar in the Poonch district. Authorities have evacuated residents from vulnerable areas.
In Gujarat, the waters are receding in Surat, but the full extent of the tragedy is emerging. Reports confirm that a 17-year-old and a school van driver were among those who lost their lives in rain-related incidents. Across the country, more than 10 rain-related deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours.
Separately, the 20th anniversary of the 2006 Mumbai train blasts was observed on July 11. Survivors of the serial bombings, which killed over 180 people and injured hundreds, say they still await full justice. Many have stopped travelling by train, burdened by memories of that evening.
