Monsoon Advances: Heavy Rain Alert for Northeast, Delayed Showers in West and Central India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several northeastern states as the southwest monsoon advances through parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh. According to the IMD's latest forecast, cloudy skies and thundershowers are likely in some parts of Kolkata on June 20, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to persist in many regions on Saturday.
The monsoon has reached Harnai, Solapur, Hyderabad, Koraput, Phulbani, Muzaffarpur, Jamui, and Ranchi. Conditions are expected to become favourable for further advancement over additional areas of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of Chhattisgarh around June 23.
However, the western and central parts of India are experiencing delayed monsoon onset, with some areas still facing dry conditions. The El Nino effect has raised concerns of a potential rainfall deficit across the country. The IMD notes that active monsoon and El Nino conditions are causing uneven weather patterns, even as heatwaves persist in some pockets of north and central India.
Residents in the affected northeastern states are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions against flooding and landslides. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the monsoon evolves.
