Monsoon advances across India: Heavy rain in Delhi, Mumbai; alerts in several states

The southwest monsoon has arrived in northern and western India, bringing heavy rainfall to Delhi, Mumbai, and parts of south India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts for further downpours across northern, western, and central regions over the coming days.

Delhi recorded its first July monsoon onset since 2021, with the system reaching the capital on June 29, 2025. This follows a pattern of recent arrivals: June 28 in 2024, June 25 in 2023, and June 30 in 2022. The monsoon has advanced rapidly across North India, covering several states earlier than usual.

While the rainfall is crucial for agriculture and water reservoirs, authorities have warned of potential risks. Mumbai remains under an orange alert, indicating heavy to very heavy rain, and residents have been advised to stay indoors unless necessary. The city's civic bodies are monitoring waterlogging and traffic disruptions.

In the hilly states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, authorities have cautioned about landslides and flash floods. The weather has already caused damage in some areas, with roads blocked and local infrastructure affected. Karnataka and the northeastern states continue to experience significant monsoon impact, with rainfall exceeding normal levels in several districts.

The active monsoon is being driven by a combination of factors, including a strong low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and a favourable wind pattern. The IMD has advised farmers and local administrations to stay updated on weather warnings and take precautionary measures.

As the monsoon progresses, citizens in affected regions are urged to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. The IMD will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves.
