Modi's Indonesia Visit: Defence, Critical Minerals Top Agenda as Two Leaders Meet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday began a three-nation tour of Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, a visit that aims to strengthen India's ties with key Indo-Pacific partners. The tour, scheduled from July 6 to 11, is part of India's Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision, and its commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Modi arrived in Jakarta on Monday afternoon and was received at the airport by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, a gesture the Prime Minister described as touching. In a post on X, Modi noted that in 2018 the two nations elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which has already benefited their citizens. He said the upcoming discussions would add further momentum to this partnership across diverse sectors.

The leaders are expected to focus on bilateral cooperation in defence and maritime partnerships, critical minerals, food security and the digital economy during their meeting on Tuesday. These areas align with both countries' strategic interests in ensuring stable supply chains, regional security and economic growth.

Indonesia is a key partner for India in Southeast Asia, and the two countries share maritime boundaries in the Andaman Sea. The visit underscores India's deepening engagement with the region, particularly in the context of China's growing influence. Critical minerals, such as nickel and cobalt, are essential for electronics and renewable energy technologies, making cooperation in this sector significant for both economies.

The tour also includes stops in Australia, where Modi will attend the Quad summit, and New Zealand, focusing on trade and security. This three-nation itinerary reflects India's broader strategy of building robust partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
