Mob Lynching Erupts After Rape and Murder of 11-Year-Old Girl in West Bengal
An 11-year-old girl was raped and murdered after being abducted on Saturday in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district. Her body was found in a village pond on Sunday morning. The incident has sparked anger and led to the lynching of a youth allegedly seen with the suspects.
The girl’s mother expressed grief over the police response, stating that a missing person complaint filed Saturday evening did not prompt an immediate search. 'Had the police started a search operation then, gone through CCTV footage, my daughter could have been found alive,' she said.
Three suspects have been arrested, including a rickshaw-van puller known to the family. The girl’s grandfather demanded capital punishment for the accused and action against police personnel who delayed the investigation.
On Monday, heavy police deployment was ordered in Baruipur and nearby areas to prevent further violence. Despite this, hundreds gathered demanding justice and the suspension of officers who allegedly failed to act promptly.
Locals identified a suspect from CCTV footage, leading to the detention of one person. Subsequently, an auto-driver named Indrajit Mondol was dragged from his home and lynched by a mob Sunday morning, accused of helping the abductor. Mondol’s mother claims he was innocent and was at home at the time of the incident.
Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee participated in a candlelight protest and assured the family of justice. The incident highlights concerns over police inaction and mob violence in the region.
