Messi Eyes Record as Argentina Faces Jordan in World Cup Finale

Argentina will face Jordan in their final group match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on June 28, with Lionel Messi looking to extend his historic run. The forward has scored 18 career World Cup goals, breaking the previous record of 16 held by Germany's Miroslav Klose.

Messi scored all five goals for Argentina in the first two group matches, including a hat-trick against Algeria and a brace against Austria. He has now scored in six consecutive World Cup games, joining France's Just Fontaine and Brazil's Jairzinho as the only players to achieve this feat.

The 39-year-old has made 201 international appearances for Argentina, including a record 28 World Cup matches. He had been dealing with a minor hamstring injury with Inter Miami of Major League Soccer prior to the tournament, but has shown no signs of slowing down.

Kylian Mbappé, who matched Klose at 16 goals with a brace against Iraq, failed to score in France's final group match against Norway. Mbappé has four goals in the tournament so far.

Argentina has already secured qualification for the knockout stages, but a strong performance against Jordan would provide momentum for the rounds ahead. Jordan, ranked 70th in FIFA standings, are aiming for an upset against the two-time World Cup champions.
