Manipur Police Arrest Two Alleged Members of Banned Groups for Extortion
Security forces in Manipur arrested two individuals linked to proscribed militant outfits on suspicion of involvement in extortion activities, according to a police statement released on Wednesday (July 8, 2026). The arrests come amid continued efforts by state authorities to curb illegal fundraising by insurgent groups.
A 22-year-old cadre of the banned Kuki National Front (KNF) was apprehended from the Nungkhal bridge area in Jiribam district on Monday. Police said a country-made pistol with a magazine and six live rounds were recovered from his possession. In a separate operation, a 38-year-old member of the outlawed People's Liberation Army (PLA) was arrested in Bishnupur district on the same day for alleged extortion activities.
Additionally, a person was taken into custody on Tuesday for allegedly extorting money from vehicle owners at Tairenpokpi in Imphal West district. The police statement did not provide further details on this individual's alleged group affiliation.
Manipur, a state in northeastern India, has experienced decades of insurgency, with several armed groups demanding greater autonomy or independence. Extortion, often described as 'taxation' by these groups, remains a persistent issue, targeting businesses, government contractors, and ordinary citizens. The state government and security forces have repeatedly vowed to crack down on such illegal activities.
During a visit to the Noney district headquarters on Tuesday, Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh instructed officers to remain proactive in curbing extortion. He emphasized the need to maintain law and order, strengthen anti-extortion operations, and ensure prompt investigation and disposal of pending cases. Singh's remarks reflect ongoing efforts by the police to address public concerns about insecurity and economic disruption caused by extortion.
The arrests are part of a broader campaign against militant financing. In recent months, security forces have intensified operations across the state, leading to the seizure of weapons, cash, and incriminating documents. However, experts note that the deep-rooted nature of insurgency and the involvement of multiple factions pose challenges to lasting peace.
Authorities have urged citizens to report extortion attempts and cooperate with law enforcement. The police have also reiterated their commitment to protecting the rights of all communities while upholding constitutional values. The arrested individuals are expected to be produced before a local court, where they will face charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
