Manipur Police Arrest Three Militants in Coordinated Anti-Extortion Operations

Manipur police have arrested three suspected militants from two districts of the Imphal Valley on charges of extortion, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The arrests were carried out in Imphal West and Thoubal districts over the weekend. The individuals are believed to be active members of two banned militant outfits: the Kangleipak Communist Party (Military Formation List) and the People's Liberation Army.

According to a police statement, two cadres of the KCP (MFL) were apprehended on Sunday from Thoubal Bazar in Thoubal district. They have been identified as Abujam Sumit Singh, 20, and Makuchung Gangmei, 23. Police said 48 'donation cards' — commonly used by militant groups to solicit extortion payments — were seized from their possession.

On Monday, a cadre of the People's Liberation Army was arrested from Khumanlampak in Imphal West district. The suspect, Oinam Dhanaraj Singh, is 29 years old.

Manipur has experienced decades of insurgency, with multiple militant groups active in the state. Extortion remains a key source of funding for these outfits, often targeting local businesses and government contractors. Police continue to conduct operations to curb such activities.
