Manipur Police Apprehend Three Militants, Seize Weapons in Anti-Extortion Drive
The Manipur Police have arrested three individuals allegedly linked to two banned insurgent groups on charges of extortion, according to an official statement released on Monday (July 13, 2026). The arrests were carried out across two districts of the state.
A fourth person with suspected ties to militants was also taken into custody, and security forces recovered arms and ammunition from his possession.
On Saturday, police apprehended Salam Bijanda Singh (37), a member of the banned United Peoples' Party of Kangleipak (UPPK), in the Porompat area of Imphal East district.
On the same day, two cadres from the Kangleipak Communist Party (Nongdrenkhomba) were arrested in separate locations within Imphal East district. One was captured in Wangkhei Ayangpalli, while the other, identified as Md Motim (31), was nabbed from Khurai Nandeibam Leikai.
In a separate operation on Sunday, security forces detained Chagisongtanbou Nkhamnamai (46) near Yairipok Pechi Road under the Yairipok police station in Thoubal district. A self-loading rifle with a magazine and ten cartridges were seized from his possession, the statement added.
The arrests are part of ongoing efforts to curb extortion and militant activity in the region. Manipur has experienced decades of insurgency, with several banned groups operating in the state.
